Smashwords: Book Marketing and Style Guides

[caption id="attachment_2034" align="alignright" width="254" caption="Smashwords: Book Marketing Guide"]Smashwords: Book Marketing Guide[/caption]

Mark Coker, Founder and CEO of Smashwords, has written a simple and user-friendly primer for ebook and print writers on how to market their books at his publishing company or elsewhere. This is free and is available in multiple reading formats.

Mark suggests 26 DYIs. each do-it-yourself is clearly defined and supported with examples and helpful links. Everything is feasible and can be outright implemented. Some may give immediate results and others may require time for the changes to be noticeable.

What's interesting about the tips is that they not only apply to writers but to bloggers as well. Writers need help on how to increase their sales in a competitive market - bloggers need tools on how to boost their site traffic.

This guide has opened a can of fresh ideas on how to attract more readers to my blog and where to find them. In fact, right after reading the guide, I immediately implemented a couple of his tips and they worked for me.

As Mark puts it, the guide is a living document and he invites everyone to contribute to its future updates by providing feedback and by sharing free marketing and distribution tools that would be beneficial to all.

I recommend this free marketing guide to amateur and professional writers and bloggers.I also included his other PDF, Style Guide.

Justin Bieber's AMA 2010 Performance: Love it or Hate it?

I know that real people have outnumbered twitter users who hate Justin Bieber compared to those who tweet every second that they so adore this lez kid. After his American Music Awards (AMA) performance earlier, the obsessive "marry-me-Justin" tweets from pre-teenafers were outnumbered only by the "Justin-is-a-girl" tweets and the more aggressive "F***-you-Justin" tweets. Again, lez kid.

(P.S., if you're cursing out a teen pop star on Twitter... take a look in the mirror and re-evaluate your situation or maybe get a fulfilling job. We hear online dating services work for the unlikeliest of candidates or maybe visit a pornsite, instead.

We just can't dislike her him. Sure, he may be a little overrated, but nobody who makes that kind of money isn't underrated. He's talented and he wears extremely shiny sneakers. What's not to love including his Filipina girlfriend?

Though Bieber usually does Timberlake/Usher inspired dance performances, tonight he busted out his ballad, "Pray," complete with a Gospel chorus and earnest, near-tears emo facial expressions... and I thought it was phenomenal.

Of course, what I think isn't what matters. Feature your comments below what you thought of his performance.

Marikina Christmas Festival: Perya

As I promised, I would take glimpse of shots of the carnival placed on the other side of the riverbend. I still have another one to visit which is the Wonderland or Wonder Park.

Anyway, I was with Rui, Sam, Cha, Mel, Marlon and Ken. Foodtrip much that we ordered around 34 sticks of assorted isaw, hotdog, dugo (betamax), intestines and all that jazz. While we were waiting, we were also munching of grilled squid, chicken thigh, stuffed bangus (milkfish) and stuffed tilapia.

We all tried riding the caterpillar. This was the only carnival ride I could dare to ride on when I was still a child. I was very afraid of heights and also other stuff like Horror Train did not click on me. But guess what, Marlon, Ken and I tried the filthy haunted house which we just fooled and scream our lungs out inside.

Warning: You would just hear my voice screaming all throughout half of our ride. I turned off the video because the gear shifted to a faster one and I was afraid that I might lose grip of my camera :D

Pizza Hut Lechon

Come on guys, this should be easy!

[caption id="attachment_1981" align="aligncenter" width="321" caption="Pizza Lechon"]Pizza Hut[/caption]

Pizza Hut, home to the country’s Pinaka – pizza, was started in 1958 by two enterprising college students, Frank & Dan Carney, in their hometown in Wichita, Kansas. Since then it has become the largest & most popular pizza chain with over 12,000 restaurants in 90 countries around the globe in 2004.

Philippine Pizza Inc., the franchise owner and operator of Pizza Hut, has over 140 restaurants, here in the Philippines since it began in 1984. Its locations are strategically located from Baguio to Mindanao & are now the country’s most popular pizza restaurant, with its dine-in restaurants, delivery units and express counters.

Weight Loss In Less Than a Minute?

There are 10 simple activities “to cut calories and burn fat that literally take 60 seconds or less.”

[caption id="attachment_1957" align="alignright" width="425" caption="Weight Loss Anger"]Weight Loss Anger[/caption]

1. “Mix a juice spritzer”

Vaccariello suggests taking half of your favorite juice and mixing it with plain or sparkling water. Doing this obviously cuts your calories in half. But, of course, you’d want to taste the full flavors of your juice and diluting it in water makes it half as enjoyable. Instead, try scheduling your juice-drinking. If you usually have one glass a day, have one every other day. You get the same benefits as “spritzing” it and still get all the sweetness!

2. “Walk while you talk”

This point is basically about multitasking. And this is best done when on the phone, when almost all body parts are idle. According to Liz, doing the laundry while talking on the phone burns 69 calories; setting the table, 85 calories; and watering the plants, 102 calories. Try other physical activities when you’re on the phone. Even pacing back and forth is better than just sitting on the couch.

3. “Study the wrapper”

Checking the label for nutrition facts is your responsibility for yourself. The Prevention editor pointed out that the calories printed on the label may not necessarily be the total calories of the container. It’s actually the number of calories per serving. But how many servings does the container have? Check it. It’s written there as well. And do some simple math to calculate the actual calorie count.

4. “Sip green tea before a walk”

Way, way back, an entire edition of The Daily 10 was devoted on discussing the benefits of green tea on weight loss. Vaccariello is also a believer in the tea and she recommends having a cup before a walk “so that you burn fat more easily,” but advises people with high blood pressure against it.

5. “Pack a lunch”

The logic used in this tip is that restaurant, maybe even cafeteria, food makes you eat more than a packed homecooked lunch, probably because there are lots of options and an extra serving is so easy to get. The article says that dining out gives you an excess of about 300 calories.

6. “Dip your bread”

The weight loss expert cited a study concluding that people who dip their bread in olive oil consumed 52 calories fewer than those who spread butter. Olive oil is very much recommended because it’s very healthy and “may also help you eat less.”

7. “Sprinkle flax on cereal”

A hundred grams of ground flax seeds supplies 28 grams of fiber and 20 grams of protein. The main benefit is that consuming it gives you the feeling of being full, therefore, lessening overeating tendencies. It’s no wonder Liz thinks it’s a good complement to cereal, yogurt and bread/muffin mixes. And also mostly anything that goes well with some nuttiness.

8. “Schedule a blood test”

She also calls on women to have a blood test to check the health of their thyroid. According to her, “one in every 12 women has an underactive thyroid” that results in a slower metabolism. If you’re one of those whose thyroid is a little lazy, it’s better that you know it to be able to adjust your diet and fitness regimen to your condition.

9. “Supersize your H2O”

This is probably one of the most important and, at the same time, easiest tips presented by Vaccariello. Drinking lots of water is always good for you—for hydration, for detox and also for weight loss. The more you drink, the less you eat!

10. “Eat a chunky salad”

Another way to trick yourself into eating less is by starting with a salad cut in bigger-than-usual chunks. It takes more time to chew chunky pieces than sliced and shredded ones, which are quickly forgotten because only stayed in your mouth for a very short while. A more memorable starter makes you eat less when the main course arrives.

5 Disappointments in Harry Potter (Film)

I am a huge fan of the books, but the Harry Potter movies have left me a little dissatisfied - not trying to be too nitpicky. I understand and accept that the books and movies are two separate entities and that the books contain scenes and information that the movies can only allude to and intended to provoke visual and audible stimulation.

However, there are a few moments in the Harry Potter books that could've been fleshed out a little bit better, that could've benefited greatly from being shown on screen, and that were treated with the same ambiguity when finally placed onto film.

1. The Weasley Twins Get Their Revenge - Order of the Phoenix

[caption id="attachment_1920" align="aligncenter" width="515" caption="The Weasley Twins Get Their Revenge - Order of the Phoenix"]Harry Potter[/caption]

The moment in the fifth movie where the Weasley twins staged their last stand against Dolores Umbridge should've been a giant moment that rallied the crowd to cheers. Instead it was just a few seconds of lame fireworks and little fanfare.

2. Sirius' Death - Order of the Phoenix

[caption id="attachment_1921" align="aligncenter" width="515" caption="Sirius' Death - Order of the Phoenix"]Harry Potter[/caption]

One of the least satisfactory parts of book #5 is when Harry's godfather finally bites it in the Ministry of Magic. The scene, as written, is difficult to navigate, and I was looking forward to seeing this moment up on screen and hopefully gleaming more emotion from it. The scene in the film was just as ambiguous and unsatisfying.

[ad]

3. Harry and Ginny Kiss - Half Blood Prince

[caption id="attachment_1922" align="aligncenter" width="515" caption="Harry and Ginny Kiss - Half Blood Prince"]Harry Potter[/caption]

The beauty of the sixth book is that it's half a serious, hardcore exploration of dark magic and half a fluffy teenage sex comedy. The moment where Harry and Ginny finally smooch was great in the book, but a real letdown in the movie.

4. Dumbledore's Death - Half Blood Prince

[caption id="attachment_1923" align="aligncenter" width="515" caption="Dumbledore's Death - Half Blood Prince"]Harry Potter[/caption]

I couldn't even find a picture of this moment (read: I didn't look very hard), so that tells you how lackluster it was. Like Sirius' death before it, this moment from the movie could've been enhanced by better direction and more time taken to set up the scene. Ultimately it was just kind of like, yeah, that happened.

5. Lupin Explains It All - Prisoner of Azkaban

[caption id="attachment_1924" align="aligncenter" width="515" caption="Lupin Explains It All - Prisoner of Azkaban"]Harry Potter[/caption]

One of the best things about the book 'The Prisoner of Azkaban' is all the new mythology and backstory. We don't get enough of that in the movie, though I understand it would be difficult to put all of that on screen. I think what I'm trying to say is that we didn't get enough Lupin. Because Lupin is foxy.

You might have noticed that most of the disappointing moments occurred in the 5th and 6th movies, both directed by David Yates, who has also directed Harry Potter: The Half Blood Prince. Though I haven't watched it yet, and will be watching this weekend, if David Yates does something nasty on Severus Snape's death.... I don't know. T_____T

Kate Middleton's Engagement Ring

Kate Middleton Engagement RingWith all the buzz surrounding the news of Prince Williams' engagement to Kate Middleton, the approaching Princess Catherine, perhaps the most touched is the one story surrounding Kate Middleton's engagement ring.

Cost

Though it is difficult to appraise the exact cost of Kate Middleton's engagement ring we do know that when Lady Diana received the engagement ring in 1981 it cost about $45,000 or - 1,955,818.80 in Philippine Peso.

Save the Date

No date has been announced for the wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William, most likely it will be during the spring or summer next year

Marikina Christmas Bazaar

Every Christmas season, Marikina City sponsors a bazaar where you could eat street food and shop for almost everything cheap you found in a market. I visited Marikina Riverpark to take some pictures of the bazaar. Everyone seems to enjoy the sight and the spirit of shopping until a certain female vendor abruptly exploded her despair in life when she shouted at me inquiring why I was taking videos of her stall thinking I am from GMA or ABSCBN. LOL. Ranting here would just be a waste of my witty arbitration that might cause my readers to demise her accidental existence on earth.

Going back... Usually these stores open around after 3PM and they can stay until 5 in the morning the next day.

If you would be coming from Cubao area, by commute, take FX or jeepney ride to any of the following public utility vehicles: SSS Village and Parang. Be careful when you take San Mateo or Montalban because some of them have a different route - via Marcos Hi-way. By car, follow the jeepneys (hehehe)

Going forth Marikina, most of the food stalls are on the left side of the Marikina bridge and the right are the clothes and stuff. You can also drink along the riverbend since there are local pubs nearby.

Bariatric Surgery for the Severely Obese

It has not come into my point of life that I reached a BMI of more than 24 (gawd thanks) but to some people who have a very sedentary lifestyle, this is not a rare thing. I have been pushing people to go to the gym and have a healthier lifestyle - one of my media is my blog. Again, if you find yourself some excuses, you may read my previous article, Shake Off Those Calories – at Home and at Work, for some tips.

Body Mass Index
The body mass index (BMI), or Quetelet index, is a heuristic measure of body weight based on a person's weight and height.

- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_mass_index, Wikipedia

BMI Formula

CategoryBMI range – kg/m2BMI PrimeMass (weight) of a 1.8 metres
(5 ft 11 in) person with this BMI
Severely underweightless than 16.5less than 0.66less than 53.5 kilograms
(8.42 st; 118 lb)
Underweightfrom 16.5 to 18.4from 0.66 to 0.73between 53.5 and 59.9 kilograms
(8.42 and 9.43 st; 118 and 132 lb)
Normalfrom 18.5 to 24.9from 0.74 to 0.99between 60 and 80.9 kilograms
(9.4 and 12.74 st; 130 and 178 lb)
Overweightfrom 25 to 29.9from 1.0 to 1.19between 81 and 96.9 kilograms
(12.8 and 15.26 st; 180 and 214 lb)
Obese Class Ifrom 30 to 34.9from 1.2 to 1.39between 97 and 112.9 kilograms
(15.3 and 17.78 st; 210 and 249 lb)
Obese Class IIfrom 35 to 39.9from 1.4 to 1.59between 113 and 129.9 kilograms
(17.8 and 20.46 st; 250 and 286 lb)
Obese Class IIIover 40over 1.6from 130 kilograms (
20 st; 290 lb)

According to the table above, if you would make the BMI Prime as your basis, where the you compute the actual BMI to the upper value of a given category (i.e. Individuals with BMI Prime < 0.74 are underweight; those between 0.74 and 0.99 have optimal weight; and those at 1.00 or greater are overweight), you can easily determine where you at.

Traditional Methods

For most people who are severely overweight, those who already categorized unhealthy in clinical terms, conventional methods such as diet and exercise are just merely impossible to reach the goal of losing weight - becoming healthier.

Currently, bariatric surgery may be the best solution for you *Disclaimer: again, I am no licensed physician, so it is always best to consult your doctor first*. This surgery is not considered cosmetic as people who undergo this procedure do this because their weight poses great risk already. Wherein obesity associates with serious health problems like Type II diabetes, hypertension, heart attack, stroke, to name a few.

Standards

Bariatric surgery promotes significant and sustained weight loss by restricting and/or altering the gastrointestinal (digestive) tract.

[caption id="attachment_1831" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Illustration of Bariatric Surgery"]Bariatric Surgery[/caption]

  1. Gastric bypass surgery - is an irreversible procedure that involves reducing the size of the stomach and bypassing the small intestines. The effect is early fullness and malabsorption of food.

  2. Adjustable gastric banding (Lap-Band surgery) - it involves the placement of a hollow silicone band around the upper part of the stomach. The band can be adjusted (filled) for optimal weight loss depending on the patient’s weight loss; it can be removed anytime.

To date, the latter is the safest and only reversible and adjustable form of Bariatric surgery. These two surgeries are usually done laparoscopically, meaning multiple small incisions, performed with long instruments guided by video.

Conan O’brien is back on TV after 9-months on hiatus! He is one of the best man today - like the best man who holds onto a wedding ring and says a cheesy attempt at being heartfelt toast during wedding receptions, NOT!

On one of his shows recently, he mentioned Tokyo Sandblaster. This made worldwide trend on twitter! WTF is Tokyo Sandblaster?

Much to my keen knowledge, I have some basic jargon issues when it comes to TV humour. Please enlighten me.

Cigarette Warning Labels

I was once a smoker in my life. I tried quitting once, when I was diagnosed with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) during college but after a year of quitting, I went back to nicotine addiction.

It is true that this social habit starts with peer pressure during highschool. People tend to find ways how they can feel belong in the a group or society. Also, this provides you a relaxing feeling that you tend to have an oral fixation for something you are stressed about -which is not surprisingly common to call center industry.

Now that I face a more serious health condition with my heart, I do not want to agitate and push myself six feet under. There have been images circulating which looks very terrifying, but likewise mere effective in controlling cigarette smoking. This is lieu with what MMDA has imposed with their warning signs.

I have friends who smoke and I do not force them to quit. In the era where fitness has become more marketable than adding carbon monoxide into our atmosphere, I make sure that I give them thoughts to think about everytime they inhale toxin.

Here are some of my favorite images that should also be printed along with half of the cigarette packs here in the Philippines:

Fitness First Fort Bonifacio and Metro East Get New Spinners

Spinner NxtEarlier this week, I think it was Sunday, a lot of styro are being displaced in the stock room of Fitness First Metro East. I noticed that several workers were assembling new bikes inside the cycling studio upstairs.

Then, two days after, during my squats program, when the maintenance guy at Fitness First Fort Bonifacio turned on the lights inside the studio, I noticed the same bikes that were deployed in Metro East! I heard cycling fanatics rumoring about these new equipment inside the locker room (eavesdrop much) that only the two clubs were issued new spinners. This is hearsay, unless your own club have these too, please let me know.

Hear ye Cosmic Cycling and Les Mills RPM enthusiasts, the new bikes are ready for test ride. And I might as well do RPM tomorrow since it will be my day off.

I tried riding the bike in full sweat gear after my program. They are definitely more comfortable and look in awesome sturdy. Not to  mention the ergonomic design, plus two water bottle holders near the hand grips. As they are new, it still has a fluid motion when you start pedaling.

I guess I am starting to see some improvements specially with Metro East that we, clients, see where our membership fee go to - not just the company solely monetizing what they get. But Metro East still does not have public computers.

Caloric Content from KFC website.

SandwichCaloriesFatSodium
KFC Original Recipe® Double Down54032 g1380 mg
KFC Grilled Double Down46023 g1430 mg

To get this out of the way, I haven't eaten a Double Down. I probably will and I'll probably like it. But there are so many much tastier ways to clog your arteries that it's not high on the priority list (talking about McDonald's Quarter Pounder Sandwich).

So instead, let's start with the Double Down's calorie count: 540 calories for the crispy "Original Recipe" version and 460 for a grilled variant. Those seem like big numbers, but by fast food standards, they're pretty mild: Calorie counts for burgers are even higher like 1,350 for a Wendy's Triple Baconator. Even the humble Big Mac, a lightweight by modern standards, contains 540 calories, exactly the same number as the Double Down.

But calorie counts are overrated. We all need to eat, to the tune of about 2,500 calories per day for a healthy adult. It's not the calories so much as what you do with them. Are you getting a lot of fat, cholesterol, and sodium? Or lots of fiber and vitamins instead?

Here, the Double Down's credentials are more impressive.

  • Those 540 calories contain 145 milligrams of cholesterol (more than twice that of the Big Mac which almost half of our daily allowance).

  • Along with 1,380 milligrams of sodium (research says we should not exceed no more than 2,400 per day)

  • Lastly, 32 grams of fat. So, for getting only about one-quarter of the calories that you need in a day, you're exhausting about half your budget of "bad stuff".

So what? Dive in! Just regulate!

Taxi Driver in Greedy Despair

[caption id="attachment_4362" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Green Devil"]Green Devil[/caption]

We had scheduled to meet at Fort to dine out. I usually do the commute - FX to Cubao, MRT ride to Guadalupe then jeepney to Fort. Earlier, I was too tired after my leg program at the gym so I decided to take a cab.

It was a clear Sunday morning afternoon. Despite of Manny Pacquiao show on the local channels, as expected, there would be less traffic and less vehicles on the road. I did not have enough money to pay the cab since the only change left was last night's fare.

So I called Rui to meet me nearby Renaissance and pay for the taxi fare.

..... Typical taxi driving skills.

As I was reading my work email from home, I came across that we will be having our own library at work! I used to spend my lunch time at Dell's library making myself nerdier everytime I visit the room. Gawd I am such a nerd!

I remember that when I was still in training with Dell, I borrowed a book entitled, 30 Reasons Employees Hate Their Managers. This is a compilation of surveys performed by Bruce L. Katcher and Adam Snyder with their insights. This book gave me a broader perspective of logical and illogical reasons that a manager would need to understand their staff are doing their runarounds.

I have managed to get an ebook copy and I am hoping this would be beneficial for you *cross-fingers for copyright infringement issues*. Just click the cover page to download the ebook. But of course, if you have an extra money, go to National Bookstore and buy the hardcover. :D

Can anyone orient me that there's a booming Pinoy Pop industry? And why do these men look like women? Is this a way of hermaphrodites showing their frustration over cross-dressing? Gawd!

Dairy Queen Banana Split

After a few weeks of not dining out together because he went to China, after doing my heavy lift and Body Jam at Fitness Fort Bonifacio, and him, after his Body Pump and Hip Hop class at Fitness First Eastwood City, we decided to meet. The usual dinner which I have been skipping or minimising a lot because of my strict diet.

For the past few days, I have shifted to a no-fat, less carbs, more protein liquid and soft diet not just because I wanted to lose weight, but also, my braces force my teeth so much that I can barely chew. A few days after these brackets and wires were installed, I finally got a chance to munch on soft food.

Too much excitement leads to guilt. We were looking for Red Mango at Eastwood Mall but we couldn't find it. So we went to Dairy Queen to try the Banana Split. I said to myself that I will be just working my ass off tomorrow to burn these calories.

Chamomile is an herb that comes from a flowering plant from the daisy family. Both the fresh and dried flowers of chamomile have been used to create teas for centuries to cure a number of health problems. The active ingredient in chamomile essential oil is known as bisabolol, which has a number of anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties.

What are the Benefits of Chamomile?
Chamomile can be used topically or orally to treat a number of everyday ailments, such as:
