What are the Benefits of Water Fasting?

[caption id="attachment_2340" align="alignright" width="353" caption="Water Fasting"]Water Fasting[/caption]

There has been much contention in the scientific field about whether or not fasting is beneficial to one's health. Fasting is an integral part of many of the major religions including Islam, Judaism and Christianity. Many are dubious as to whether the physiological effects are as beneficial as the spiritual promoted by these religions. There is a significant community of alternative healers who believe that fasting can do wonders for the human body. This paper will look at the arguments presented by these healers in an attempt to raise awareness of the possible physiological benefits that may result from fasting.

Fasting technically commences within the first twelve to twenty-four hours of the fast. A fast does not chemically begin until the carbohydrate stores in the body begin to be used as an energy source. The fast will continue as long as fat and carbohydrate stores are used for energy, as opposed to protein stores. Once protein stores begin to be depleted for energy (resulting in loss of muscle mass) a person is technically starving. (1)

The benefits of fasting must be preceded by a look at the body's progression when deprived of food. Due to the lack of incoming energy, the body must turn to its own resources, a function called autolysis. (2) Autolysis is the breaking down of fat stores in the body in order to produce energy. The liver is in charge of converting the fats into a chemical called a ketone body, "the metabolic substances acetoacetic acid and beta-hydroxybutyric acid" (3), and then distributing these bodies throughout the body via the blood stream. "When this fat utilization occurs, free fatty acids are released into the blood stream and are used by the liver for energy." (3) The less one eats, the more the body turns to these stored fats and creates these ketone bodies, the accumulation of which is referred to as ketosis. (4)

Detoxification is the foremost argument presented by advocates of fasting. "Detoxification is a normal body process of eliminating or neutralizing toxins through the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph glands, and skin." (5). This process is precipitated by fasting because when food is no longer entering the body, the body turns to fat reserves for energy. "Human fat is valued at 3,500 calories per pound," a number that would lead one to believe that surviving on one pound of fat every day would provide a body with enough energy to function normally. (2) These fat reserves were created when excess glucose and carbohydrates were not used for energy or growth, not excreted, and therefore converted into fat. When the fat reserves are used for energy during a fast, it releases the chemicals from the fatty acids into the system which are then eliminated through the aforementioned organs. Chemicals not found in food but absorbed from one's environment, such as DDT, are also stored in fat reserves that may be released during a fast. One fasting advocate tested his own urine, feces and sweat during an extended fast and found traces of DDT in each. (5)

A second prescribed benefit of fasting is the healing process that begins in the body during a fast. During a fast energy is diverted away from the digestive system due to its lack of use and towards the metabolism and immune system. (6) The healing process during a fast is precipitated by the body's search for energy sources. Abnormal growths within the body, tumors and the like, do not have the full support of the body's supplies and therefore are more susceptible to autolysis. Furthermore, "production of protein for replacement of damaged cells (protein synthesis) occurs more efficiently because fewer 'mistakes' are made by the DNA/RNA genetic controls which govern this process." A higher efficiency in protein synthesis results in healthier cells, tissues and organs. (7) This is one reason that animals stop eating when they are wounded, and why humans lose hunger during influenza. Hunger has been proven absent in illnesses such as gastritis, tonsillitis and colds. (2) Therefore, when one is fasting, the person is consciously diverting energy from the digestive system to the immune system.

In addition, there is a reduction in core body temperature. This is a direct result of the slower metabolic rate and general bodily functions. Following a drop in blood sugar level and using the reserves of glucose found in liver glycogen, the basal metabolic rate (BMR) is reduced in order to conserve as much energy within the body as can be provided. (2) Growth hormones are also released during a fast, due to the greater efficiency in hormone production. (7)

Finally, the most scientifically proven advantage to fasting is the feeling of rejuvenation and extended life expectancy. Part of this phenomenon is caused by a number of the benefits mentioned above. A slower metabolic rate, more efficient protein production, an improved immune system, and the increased production of hormones contributes to this long-term benefit of fasting. In addition to the Human Growth Hormone that is released more frequently during a fast, an anti-aging hormone is also produced more efficiently. (7) "The only reliable way to extend the lifespan of a mammal is under-nutrition without malnutrition." (5) A study was performed on earthworms that demonstrated the extension of life due to fasting. The experiment was performed in the 1930s by isolating one worm and putting it on a cycle of fasting and feeding. The isolated worm outlasted its relatives by 19 generations, while still maintaining its youthful physiological traits. The worm was able to survive on its own tissue for months. Once the size of the worm began to decrease, the scientists would resume feeding it at which point it showed great vigor and energy. "The life-span extension of these worms was the equivalent of keeping a man alive for 600 to 700 years." (8)

In conclusion, it seems that there are many reasons to consider fasting as a benefit to one's health. The body rids itself of the toxins that have built up in our fat stores throughout the years. The body heals itself, repairs all the damaged organs during a fast. And finally there is good evidence to show that regulated fasting contributes to longer life. However, many doctors warn against fasting for extended periods of time without supervision. There are still many doctors today who deny all of these points and claim that fasting is detrimental to one's health and have evidence to back their statements. The idea of depriving a body of what society has come to view as so essential to our survival in order to heal continues to be a topic of controversy.

Ask your Fitness Instructor Why Don't They Guarantee Weight Loss

[caption id="attachment_2318" align="alignright" width="320" caption="Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper"]Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper[/caption]

Have you noticed that practically no weight loss program offered guaranteed results? If they did, they would have to file bankruptcy for loss because more than half of their clients would be filing a refund for all the results.

Reason being is the paradigm of exercising and calories in and out. This is true, by the way.

Though this is the scientific way of losing weight, why do we still have overweight in the country, or at least there would be a few because they won't mind hiring a fitness coach or trainer.

It is the momentum that keeps it falls off that leads to yo-yo dieting.

Most people who struggle with their weight think of food as the enemy. They also usually hate their bodies. It's a recipe for low self-esteem or even depression. Years of yo-yo dieting have set them up to expect failure, and yet they feel obliged to diet again and again, to beat their body into submission -- as punishment for prior failure.

In the meantime, many people eat to soothe their feelings and improve their mood, only to beat themselves up afterwards. Sometimes they may eat to punish themselves for being overweight. The resulting yo-yo effect can doom anyone to a lifetime of failed diets and self-loathing.

Now how can you change this?

Fitness trainers need to know how to help them cope more effectively with their emotional issues. If you can truly guarantee results, you'll find potential clients beating down your door, wanting you to be their coach and /or trainer and providing you with more referrals than you can handle.

Person of the Year 2010 - Mark Zuckerberg

Not to mention that he is one of the biggest philanthropist to date as to cover off his taxes with his gazillion US$ worth, Mark Zuckerberg has been chosen by Time Magazine as Person of the Year 2010. The Social Network could have been a great impact on their decision, I must say.

He ousted Queen Elizabeth II as the youngest person who was featured by Time by two weeks. In which also Zuckerberg has reigned the queen as the latter joined Facebook recently.

Marfadukh Hamshallah Nittyesh Tengsiv

This was my tweet earlier when I found out that I have to go back to my Malaysian employer.

My, my recruiter, has been calling me since 9AM. As expected, I didn't hear the phone because I was so tired from yesterday's wedding; not to mention, that I sleep like a pig. When I woke up at 3:30 (was pretty late, because I get up at 2 in the afternoon, during nightshift schedule), I saw like 10 missed calls from her.She was also sweet as she sent some text messages that I have to go back to their office to physically sign the cover letter of the contract because the name that appears on it is different from my passport.

I fucking knew it! I asked her when I signed it why didn't she put my middle name. She said, it is OK because Siaron is just my middle name.

I was already at the gym at Fitness First Metro East. She kept on calling me and she even gave me tons of alternatives just how to deliver my personal signature to their office. It was past 4:30 that I decided to go to Makati and skip my lift program for the day.

As expected, there was no taxi that I could hitch as it was almost 5PM. So I rode an FX to Cubao, then MRT to Buendia - typical commute going forth Makati. I knew that I had to walk from there, and so I did. From Buendia MRT Station enroute to the heart of Paseo de Roxas. While walking, she kept on calling me inquiring where was I. I guess she already wanted to go home, too.

I practically stayed in their office for a minute just to sign the cover letter. FUE*JI$IO3489'ty3/9w4592353$^@#$%@)!!!!

Going to Ayala Station was jampacked, too. So I walked again from PBCom Tower to Ayala EDSA. It was my first time to ride jeepney going to Market! Market! from EDSA. To my demise, there was a slythering line of people. So I put my luck in the Fort Bus queue via West Route. Seriously, I didn't have any idea where it was going as there's another line via East Route.

My tweet had to be encrypted in some sort of foreign language. This expresses my raging rant to my recruiter that she messed up my schedule today. Not to mention that I saw my TL and my other co-worker (who should also be working with me at this moment) drinking beer at a nearby restaurant because their friends came back from Europe after deployment.

Katy Perry - Firework

I have been listening to this song as soon as I heard that it was published and released on Youtube. I just felt the need to share the lyrics and the video in case you feel worthless as this song will uplift your spirit.

[fancy_titled_box title="Katy Perry - Firework"]
Do you ever feel like a plastic bag,
Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper-thin
Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?

Do you ever feel already buried deep?
Six feet under screams, but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there's still a chance for you?
'Cause there's a spark in you

You just gotta ignite the light, and let it shine
Just own the night like the Fourth of July

'Cause baby, you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go "ah, ah, ah!"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make 'em go "ah, ah, ah!"
You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe

You don't have to feel like a waste of space
You're original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane, comes a rainbow

Maybe the reason why all the doors are closed
So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road
Like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow
And when it's time you know

You just gotta ignite the light, and let it shine
Just own the night like the Fourth of July

'Cause baby, you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go "ah, ah, ah!"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make 'em go "ah, ah, ah!"
You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It's always been inside of you, you, you
And now it's time to let it through

'Cause baby, you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go "ah, ah, ah!"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make 'em go "ah, ah, ah!"
You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe

Boom, boom, boom

Mr. Metro Top Model 2010 Batch 4 at Palawan 2 Bar

Trying to fixate my colloquial humdrum last Thursday night, I went to Palawan 2 bar. I was surprised that the entrance was a bit higher than the usual and it was nearly jam packed! To my surprise that a pre-pageant was held; paving their way to be the 4th batch of Mr. Metro Top Model 2010.

I so hate myself for not bringing my camera because it was all fun when they posed while in swimwear, trying to look hot where in fact some bagged their confidence ever since they started the competition. On the contrary, in all fairness to their creative costumes, the show was very astounding and colorful.

So I decided to bring along friends to watch the coronation night.

It was a bit dismay because only one person performed during the comic stand up. It could have been a lot funkier if Peanut was joined with Tsoknut. I dragged Clarice, Earl and Gus to watch with me hoping they would be in their creative costumes. Only to know of that they were in their new swimwear collection, a designer collection, casual and formal.

Here are some pictures of last night's show. To view and download hi-res pictures, go to

Homophobia Says Choice

[caption id="attachment_2179" align="alignright" width="172" caption="Ignorance"][/caption]

Homophobics have different points of view, more often, you will hear very unusual and peculiar things. Homophobia that includes same sex marriage, homosexuals in the military service and those obvious discriminatory points you could think of. You would usually here the keyword: choice.

Lifestyle is a choice, definitely. Carl Paladino, a recent New York candidate said that it is wrong for children to be brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid or successful option.

I don't remember my female heterosexual friends that they once get romantically attracted to women. After their puberty, it changes, to something like, "Most people want to sleep with men, but women are pretty tempting".

Nobody chooses what they prefer, people just enjoy the things they like, and avoid they don't.

So why is it that homophobic people just don’t seem to get this? Well here’s one possible solution that helps put my mind to rest:

Let us say you were a homosexual man (like me). You came to a point in your life where you know very well that most men are attracted to women,, but you find yourself mysteriously drawn into men. I am not talking about bisexuality here yet, because that is a deeper topic. Your society (church, friends and work environment) tells you that it is a sin, and you would definitely know that your family would frown upon the idea of being gay. What do you do, then?

Get yourself back in track, get married and have kids. Gotta feel accomplished, eh?

Now you see some openly gay people and you think to yourself “that’s not fair! They took the easy way out!” To you, resisting this temptation was one of your major accomplishments in life; a sacrifice that you had to make. Why should these people who chose the easy route be entitled to the same privileges as you?

This was not a choice to be gay, but only a choice to be honest with oneself. You often hear about people who are openly against homosexuality getting caught having a gay affair  and then their defense is that they were “tempted by the devil and gave in to that temptation.” Blasphemy, I must talk!

Nobody ever chose to be gay or straight, but any attack on openly gay people is an attack on honesty. If you aren’t ashamed of your society for preventing gay people from marrying and openly serving in the military, you’ve got some serious soul-searching to do.

Sounds biased because I am gay? I call upon hetero to discuss.

Google Adsense Suspended

Usually, when we receive 'snail' mails, it comes in bulk - this came in today.

[caption id="attachment_2164" align="aligncenter" width="540" caption="Google Adsense"]Google Adsense[/caption]

I was actually excited to check my Google Adsense account as I havent visited for the past few weeks. The last time I checked, it was running at $100+ on the first month I revamped my blog. To my demise, it was suspended!

No emails were sent to me that it was suspended. I might have clicked some advertisements on my own site, but these are very very very very very minimal and these also interests me.

I just made my appeal and based on the fora, it may take a while. No wonder Google Ads were not showing on my blog anymore, only Nuffnang, Adbrite and those manual links I put.

Pfft much.

Facebook's New Profile Page

Facebook has introduced a new profile page where it gives a more prose-y structure to your page. I am not a fan of this running sentences as I still prefer bulleted, but this gives a free-flowing train of thought when you read it. That your mind will be more dull trying to analyze how to put ideas together if presented in bullet form.

[caption id="attachment_2156" align="aligncenter" width="540" caption="Facebook's New Profile Page"]Facebook's New Profile Page[/caption]

I believe this new design gives more emphasis on the advertisement rather than giving 'what's-with-you-at-the-moment'. Oh by the way, it is a resume!

You can upgrade immediately or learn more about the new features on this page:

Ayala Triangle Gardens at Night

Finally! After two years of last seeing each other, when Dell MOA declared its cease of operation and handed it over to Telepormance, I saw these guys: Jojie, Meme and her daughter, Chloe, Karen and John. So much for Leo's assumption that he would be the hot topic, he went kapoot and did not show.

At the center of Makati CBD, during night, you would see colorful Christmas lights during 'tis season. Its worth visiting especially when they start the light show. There are good restaurants within the park and you can take tons of pictures without the guards forbidding you. You would actually feel more safe as they are everywhere!

Here are some pictures I took without tripod. Next time, I will do night HDR :D

Carpe Diem: Cedie, Ang Munting Prinsipe (Tom Taus)

A massive influx of photo profile change has occurred recently on Facebook due to drive violence again children.
Change your facebook profile picture to a cartoon from your childhoodand invite your friends to do the same. Until monday (Dec.6) there should be no human faces on facebook, but an invasion of memories. Thisis for violence against children. Please spread the word.

With much anticipation, this has been posted and retweeted across platform until I saw Earl's profile picture. It was Cedie.

I know for a fact that during his childhood, their family decided to stay abroad and try their luck in Hollywood. I think I saw a movie once on HBO where Tom Taus was one of the minor characters. After that, nothing was heard, neither for both of the siblings, Antoinette and Tomas.

I did consider Cedie because it has imparted a big impact of my music career (chos) whenever he plays his flute. I think I used the melody as my audition piece in our elementary choir. But due to overflowing gayness and estrogen recently, I chose the discreet queerdom of He-Man and Teela.

Truly it was worthwhile spending sometime in Google Images looking for Cedie, Ang Munting Prinsipe. Much to our knowledge that he has grown up and decided to spin and jock house music.

I wonder if Santino will be like this when he grows up.

Your thoughts?
